Cockapoos are a designer, or mixed, dog breed that is a cross between an American Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle creating a first generation cockapoo. Two first generation cockapoos can then be bred to produce second generation cockapoos. Because the breed is mixed, the cockapoo can attain characteristics more closely related to the poodle, or the cocker spaniel, depending on the dog. In general, cockapoos have a square, sturdy body appearance with long, feathered ears that hang close to the head, and a wavy or curly coat. On average, cockapoos reach a height of 11 to 14 inches, and weigh between 12 and 20 pounds.
Since cockapoos can carry traits from either a cocker spaniel or a poodle, it is important to look at characteristics of both pure breeds.
Cocker Spaniels are medium sized, sturdy dogs with a broad muzzle and dark, almond shaped eyes. The ears are long, and feathered at the end. They have a silky coat that is straight or slightly waved. They are equally suited as a gun dog or a household pet, making them easily adaptable to any lifestyle. They have cheerful, gentle, and sweet personalities and are of an average intelligence level. They are respectful of authority, trustworthy, active, and devoted.
Poodles have a square body appearance when shaved, with a long straight muzzle. Their dark eyes are oval shaped and set far apart. Their ears are flat, and lay close to the head. Their coat is very curly or corded. Poodles are very intelligent dogs, making them trainable to a high degree. They are willing and happy to please their owner and need to be part of a family. They are friendly with other dogs and non-canine pets, and rarely become aggressive.
Cockapoos are friendly dogs that get along well with children, and other pets. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train. They are loyal, affectionate and eager to please. Their coat is dense, and can be wavy, or curly.
Cockapoos require moderate exercise, such as a short walk or a little time spent in the yard, making them good for apartment life. They enjoy spending time with people, and playing with other animals. They shed little to no hair and are hypoallergenic.
This website is all about cockapoos and our experience in breeding them as a hobby so that we can share our love of these dogs with other families that will care for them as much as we do ours. Our very first litter was born to Keesny and Moo (the father) on August 6, 2011. It was a great experience to share in their birth. We have four healthy puppies, three males and one female. These cockapoo puppies are for sale although the female is already spoken for.
